Question:“On hoping for a miracle”

On hoping for a miracle

A miracle is not a great event. It is whatever arrives from outside your arithmetic. The narrower the sum, the more often miracles happen; the wider the sum, the rarer they are. Right now your sum is so narrow that only a miracle is left.

Shrink the question to a size that needs no miracle. Not to be fully healed, but to eat one meal today. When the small thing is done, the sum widens again. The miracle of a sick body comes through a physician’s hands.

Asclepius raised the dead, and Zeus stopped that miracle with a thunderbolt. But his temples remained, and people slept there, dreamed, and healed a little at a time.
