On listening
Listening is not waiting. Whoever listens while waiting for their turn is not listening. Listening is placing a question, instead of your own words, where the other person’s words end.
In your next conversation, ask two questions before you tell your own story, questions drawn from what the other person said. People remember longest the one who carried their words further.
The pupils of Pythagoras, it is said, spent their first five years listening without speaking. The right to speak was earned in years of hearing.
