Question:“On forgetting things”
On forgetting things
You forget not because your mind is weak but because it is holding too much at once. A person with full hands drops one thing when handed another.
Take what must be remembered out of your head and put it on a single sheet of paper. When the effort of not forgetting moves onto that sheet, the mind begins remembering again. If forgetting grows frequent and even names and roads turn strange, show it to a physician.
Simonides recalled where each guest had been sitting when the banquet hall collapsed, and so named the dead. Memory is not kept in the head. It is tied to places.
