Tears that will not come do not mean there is no grief. They mean the grief has not yet reached the body. The head knows first; the body arrives late.
Do not try to cry. Instead, say the name of the person or the thing out loud, once. A name spoken aloud is heard by the body.
The Niobe of Aeschylus sat on stage with her face veiled and said nothing for a long time. Aristophanes mocked the silence; the audience read it as grief.
