On breaking a habit
A bad habit is a shortcut you built. A shortcut does not vanish because you block it. It vanishes when another road becomes shorter.
For three days, write down what comes right before the habit: the hour, the place, the mood. Do not break the habit; move the signal in front of it. Put something else where the hand reaches.
The followers of Pythagoras asked themselves before sleep: what have I done wrong today, what have I done, what have I left undone. Habits crumbled a day at a time before that question.
