On talking behind backs

Talking behind someone’s back is trying a person who is not in the room. A trial without a defender is entertaining and always won. That is why it is worth nothing.

If you are the one talking, say only what you could say with that person present. If you are the one listening, say one thing on the spot: “Have you asked them?” Gossip loses its strength before that question.
