On being too serious
Seriousness is not a flaw. But a person who has only seriousness cannot laugh at their own mistakes, and so pays for each mistake twice.
Today, tell someone about one of your mistakes as a funny story. It need not be very funny. The moment your own mouth makes a joke of your mistake, the price of the mistake is halved.
The people of Abdera thought Democritus mad because he laughed at everything, and sent for Hippocrates. The physician, it is said, replied that he was the sanest man in the city.
