Face is a house built with other people’s eyes. It is not the house you live in but the house you guard, and the cost of guarding is always paid by the one who lives.
Choose one thing you are not doing because of face. Name the people who would truly think less of you if you did it. If the names do not pass three, do it. Three people are not the price of a house.
Hector could have withdrawn inside the gates. But he feared the reproach he would hear from Polydamas, and stayed outside the wall. Face is what stood him there.
