On bringing an animal home

What you are bringing home is not cuteness. It is fifteen years of mornings. Mornings of feeding at the same hour and cleaning up what follows.

For one month, get up at the same time every day and walk for twenty minutes, as if there were a dog to walk. If you complete the month, go to the shelter. If you do not, it is not yet time.
