On wanting to move out
Independence is not moving house. It is moving decisions. Wherever you sleep, if the decisions rest in your parents’ hands, it is not independence; and even under their roof, if the decisions rest in yours, it is half of it.
Before leaving the house, move one decision over first: the food money, the doctor, the clothes. Take one on yourself and tell them. When that one becomes three, the door opens on its own.
Demeter lost her daughter and froze the earth. In the end the year was divided: one season in her own house below, the rest with her mother. A child leaving and a mother staying made the seasons.
