On not knowing what to do with compliments

Compliments feel awkward because you were never taught how to receive. Push a compliment away and the giver’s hand is left empty. Receiving is not the opposite of humility. It is courtesy.

At the next compliment, say only two things: “Thank you. That makes me glad.” Add nothing; subtract nothing. Until those words come easily, use no other reply.
